Leather products : how to clean and condition them

Leather products are undergoing several changes with the coming up of new formulations and the results that are brought forth are quite different. Some leather products which were used for some other purpose in the past are used for some different purpose today.

With the progress of technology, there are new leather products like acrylic co polymers which are quite porous for letting the water vapor into it. That helps the leather breathe. These leather products do not have any slippery effect and dyes do not have any negative effect on them. Beeswax is a natural leather product that has been used for a long time. Nowadays it is combined with more modern ingredients and one of the basic things in beeswax is waterproofing. This helps replace natural oils.

Blackball is a combination of soot, beeswax and beef tallow that was used for treatment of leather like blackening, conditioning and waterproofing.

Cleaning leather is done by simply brushing or wiping to put off the dirt and hold the dust from working on the pores. For leather that is heavily soiled the dirt should be kept off the pores and this would help to make the leather permanent.

Cleaning is duly followed by conditioning the leather. The leather should be dried thoroughly and under natural conditions before going through the process of conditioning.

Cleaning is always followed by conditioning. Just be sure to let the item dry thoroughly and naturally, and avoid using hair dryers unless specified to be okay by the manufacturer. In some cases, using a hair dryer on low heat is permissible but of course, you want to do this with extreme care.
